Bread, wonderful bread

Ahhh. Bread. Who doesn't love it? Tightwad admits she's guilty of not using it to its full potential and has been guilty of throwing out the crusts instead of considering other uses for them. Here are some Tightwad tips related to bread:

- Don't throw away stale bread. Wrap it in a damp cloth for about a minute, then place in a pre-heated oven at 350 degrees F for about 20 minutes. Serve warm.
- Save leftover bread crusts and trimmings. Freeze them in a plastic bag and use them for making bread crumbs, croutons or stuffing. Good to add to hamburgers or meat loaf too.
- If you run out of bread crumbs, substitute dry cereal that you've ground in the food processor.
- When baking bread or buns, place the proofing dough in the oven with the light on. The temperature is perfect and the area is draft-free.
- To make bread crumbs, place pieces of dry bread in a plastic bag and then roll with a rolling pin.
- If you notice that your bread is going stale, cook with it - make Monte Cristos, Rueben sandwiches or French toast - yum!
- If you have a stockpile of bread, freeze it! Put half in the fridge and half in the freezer so you don't have to worry about freshness and you can enjoy more variety. Frozen bread toasts well too.
