Lagniappe is a term used in New Orleans that refers to a small gift given to a customer by a merchant at the time of purchase; something extra you get for free, like a baker's dozen. Sometimes it pays to buy a little something extra you don't really need to make use of a coupon. Scenario: Tightwad had a $10 off coupon that kicked in if she spent $50 before taxes. With the bill hovering around $49, she bought some tea that she would use, but wasn’t going to buy on this trip. Basically, the tea was free lagniappe.
