Tightwad top ten: uses for salt - part one

Sure, we all know we should limit our intake of salt, but that doesn't mean we have to deprive our use of it in other ways. Break out the salt cellar and get creative with some household tips! The course and gritty texture of salt makes it the perfect secret scouring weapon. Table salt is the cheapest, so it's the obvious choice. Here's the first in a Tightwad top ten series on (non-edible) uses for salt.

10. Clean burned pans by boiling water and salt in them. Salt will clean brass-bottomed pans too.
9. Put an egg in a cup of salted water. If it sinks, it is fresh, if it floats it’s bad.
8. Water will boil faster if you add a little salt to the water.
7. Help fresh cut flowers last longer by placing a pinch of salt in their water.
6. Eliminate excess suds with a sprinkle of salt.
5. Remove grease stains in clothing by mixing one part salt to four parts alcohol (and apply to the stain... hellooooo, don't go putting it in a glass!)
4. Place artificial flowers in a bag, add a half cup of table salt and then shake them vigorously. Remove the flowers, shake them off, and they will be dust free!
3. Table salt will remove stains from coffee cups, china, and piano keys.
2. Dry clean your dog by sprinkling salt on their fur. Brush the salt out along with dirt, fleas and whatever else is lurking in there.
1. For you die hard enviro - all season - hang to dry types, use salt in your final rinse to keep your clothes from freezing on the line.

Do you have any good tips for the handy household application of salt?

Wow, those are some great tips! I didn't know that salt could be used for some of those things.

Salt keep clothes on the line from freezing. Interesting. I was wondering if I could spray salt from the ceiling, removing the dust from my entire house?

Happy Thanksgiving.

Add a pinch of table salt to a freshly opened jug of milk. The milk won't sour as quickly.
