Play it cool all year - with your ceiling fan

Tightwad is pleased to give a big Tightwad welcome to Suzanne Staton, author of Laughing Wallet; THE place for frugal living tips (NB: besides Tightwad of course, but that's a no brainer). Enjoy life for less, and get your wallet laughing!

Probably one of the easiest and most painless ways to make a positive dent (would that be a bulge?) in your spending is to save energy. If you never use that kilowatt of electricity, you don't have to pay for it. And the good news is that you don’t have to change your whole lifestyle to see results. Simple changes can have an immediate impact on your bills. A good tool in the energy war is ceiling fans.

Where you live, it may already be getting cool, so you may be thinking that you don't need to know anything about ceiling fans until it gets warm again next summer. But did you know that you can use ceiling fans to help keep a room warm? It's true! It's all about what direction the blades turn. Most of the time, ceiling fan blades turn in the direction that forces the air around it down into a room (usually that direction is counter-clockwise, but it depends on the slope of the blades). But when temperatures get cooler, you can reverse the direction the blades turn. Since hot air rises, warmer air in a room is up near the ceiling, and with the direction reversed, the fan blades will push the warmer air that's trapped between the fan and the ceiling up against the ceiling, where it then pushes back down into the room. But won't the fan make the room drafty? Not if you leave the speed low. Fans cool the people in a room by blowing air over them, not by actually lowering the temperature. So, as long as the fan speed is slow, the rotating blades will force the warm air down into the room without actually blowing it over people enough to feel a draft.

Ceiling Fans are a great addition to any home, not just for cooling or recirculating the air but also for decoration as there are so many stiles available this days that are going to match any home decor.
