Blogging: digital crafting?

Tightwad LOVES to blog, and a comment from a pal the other day (the gal who came to Sex and the City with me) got me thinking. She asked me (as a non-blogger) 'what's with the blogging thing?' I've decided that blogging can be pretty easily likened to crafting. I used to crochet and do needlework. Sure it was the late 70's and my blankets were a quite alarming shade of orange and brown, but I was creating something that I loved and I found the time that I spent doing it to be sootheing and restorative. It was impulsive. It was engaging. And, in fact, a quick check of the Merriam-Webster Dictionary tells me that crafting is defining as 'to make or produce with care, skill, or ingenuity.' I also think of community building when I think of crafting, and blogging has also opened a huge online community of other moms, professionals, fruggies and foodies, and others who share their passions and hobbies on a digital platform that is accessible worldwide. Blogging allows you to create, develop skills, inform and learn. What do YOU think?

Oh! Good question! I think blogging is kind of like a quilting bee, where a bunch of ladies get together doing one thing and getting to talk about whatever. Or its kind of a coffee date with your pals, some you don't know in real life. I love it. Too many people are too quick to judge you on sight to really get to know you. I have made lots of new pals, learned several new skills and interests since I started blogging last July. I love learning new things. And as a homeschool mom who lives too far away from her support group, I love meeting new homeschool moms to toss ideas back and forth.

I totally agree. It has been a great creative outlet for me and I have so much fun doing it. I found a great way to express myself in blogging and draw inspiration from others.. like you!

New to blogging world but kinda starting to 'get it' I love reading other blogs and am never let down when searching blogs for ideas and inspiration. In time, I hope it becomes a true creative outlet for me.

I'm with you. Though, for me, it's much more fun than some of the craft work I've done in the past as this is a much larger community and I don't have to sew up the hems by hand. (Hated the finishing bits). Very addictive!

Sharing something you love and learning what others have to teach makes blogging so worthwhile. Also, I think being able to "see a little bit into other's lives and their day to day beings is better than any "reality" show out there. Blogging is just fun! Pam @ Sallygoodin

I definitely agree. The care we take to make our blogs look good and the hours we spend creating posts is certainly creative and artistic!

I love blogging. It gives me an opportunity to share my experiences as an expat and just connect with others out there. It's a great way to see the world from so many perspectives. By the way, I love your blog :-)

I couldn't agree more. I think blogging is such a creative outlet and it's allowed me to reconnect with my writing, something I've pretty much abandoned over the years. It's also such a great way to connect to other people who have shared experiences :)

I love your blog! Stopping in from the Lady Bloggers Tea Party.

Like crafting? Yeah, I agree with that. A pastime that I now choose to learn and invest time in learning to do better.

I'm new to blogging (again - I did it a few years back - but dang! things have changed some!) and I'm currently enjoying finding those out there with similar interests - and those who are moms blogging from Canada - because early on that seemed pretty slim.

As for allowing me to create? That's what I'm hoping. An outlet for creative writing, which I enjoyed in high school (quite a bit ago now) and hope to nurture again through blogging.
